Artek Chair 69 in Birch by Alvar Aalto, 1980s

Artek Chair 69 is a Finnish birch chair designed by Alvar Aalto in 1935. These examples date from the 1980s and combine compact proportions, a broad seat and a curved backrest with the warm character of naturally aged birch.

Aalto developed Chair 69 through his experiments with bent wood and the L-leg system. The construction allows the legs to connect directly to the seat, creating a stable and visually light chair suited to everyday use in dining rooms, kitchens and cafés.

The chairs are made from birch with a clear finish, a birch veneer seat and a form-pressed curved birch backrest. Their softly rounded surfaces and restrained construction express Aalto’s practical approach to wooden furniture, while the acquired patina gives each example an individual appearance.

Four chairs are available, each sold and priced individually. All show visible signs of use, including surface wear, scratches, marks and variation in the finish, particularly across the seats. The chairs can be stacked to save space when not in use.

Chair 69 has a compact footprint that works comfortably around a dining table without appearing heavy. The pale birch, honest wear and simple curved forms give these chairs a calm, lived-in presence in both modern and traditional interiors.
