Alvar Aalto War Leg Dining Table 91 for Artek, 1940s

This 1940s Alvar Aalto Table 91 for Artek is a particularly compelling wartime-era version of one of Aalto’s enduring table designs. Rather than the bent L-legs associated with standard production, it has four straight, square-section birch legs beneath a round tabletop.

During the war and immediate post-war years, shortages of materials and skilled labour disrupted Artek’s production and led to alternative construction methods. Here, layered wooden blocks and a supporting frame secure the legs to the top, making the period-specific solution clearly visible.

The table remains unrestored, preserving its original surface and the warm, pronounced patina developed through more than eight decades of use. At 127 cm in diameter, it offers a generous dining surface while retaining the balanced proportions of Aalto’s design.

The table is sturdy and shows natural age-related patina, scratches, surface wear and marks across the tabletop, edge and legs. No known structural damage has been reported. Please review all images for details.
